Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju reached Dimapur on Sunday morning to assess the situation in Nagaland arising out of flash floods and landslides that have cut off many areas in the State for the past few days, besides leading to loss of 10 lives.
After arriving from Delhi, Rijiju, accompanied by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and two of his cabinet colleagues, left on a chopper to conduct an aerial survey of the affected areas, including Kohima. However, shortly after take-off, the chopper had to return to Dimapur airport due to inclement weather.
The Union Minister then held a meeting with Rio and Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) officials at a resort in Dimapur before leaving for Delhi.
During the meeting, Rio sought special assistance to the State to overcome the current crisis.
Rijiju assured all Central help to Nagaland, besides constituting an inter-ministerial team that would be sent to the State within a week’s time to prepare correct projection of financial requirement.
He added that Indian Air Force would be kept on standby to assist the State administration.
Nagaland has been battling one of the worst natural calamities for more than a week now, with hundreds of people being displaced and houses and properties damaged, including road infrastructure. Many areas, including Kohima, have been cut off.
