In a shocking incident ahead of the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, a person carrying a whopping amount of Rs 57 lakh (!) was intercepted on Thursday by a patrol of the Assam Rifles.
On intimation from the state’s election monitoring authorities of Nagaland about interception of a substantial amount of cash by a patrol of Assam Rifles, the Surveillance Team of Investigation Directorate set up in Dimapur responded immediately.
The person was handed over to the Investigation Directorate for interrogation and the cash was recovered from him at around 9 pm. It is to be mentioned that this is the biggest cash seizure by the Investigation Directorate in the Northeast region since the declaration of elections. The identity of the person is yet to be ascertained at the time of filing this report.
With the model code of conduct coming into force after notification of elections, election expenditure monitoring activities have been initiated by all agencies requisitioned by Election Commission of India for the purpose. Directorate of Investigation of Income Tax, North East Region (NER) is on high alert during the election process.
