Smart pre-paid metering system to be made mandatory in Nagaland by December 2023

KOHIMA: Smart pre-paid metering system will be made mandatory in Nagaland by December 2023, said the Advisor for power, Nagaland, H. Tovihoto Ayemi on Saturday.

This was in line with the Power Ministry's notification that prepaid smart metres would be installed as part of the Revamped Reforms-Based Results-Linked Scheme's first phase by December 2023, reported Nagaland Post.

Tovihoto, speaking at the inauguration of the upgraded 33/11 KV, 5 MVA to 10 MVA Referral sub-station at Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR) Dimapur, said that the prepaid metering system would benefit consumers by allowing them to track their electricity usage in real-time and purchase power according to their budget.

He stated that the adoption of an online payment mode will not only save time but also reduce erroneous billing.
As a result, he urged the public to mentally prepare for the installation of the prepayment metering system.
According to Tovihoto, the department has installed around 19,000 prepaid metres across the state, with 10,000 in Dimapur and 9,000 in Kohima.
Tovihoto described the department's upgrade of the sub-station as an accomplishment, noting that a reliable power supply was a requirement for any development or progress.
On the subject of frequent load shedding and unpredictable power supply, Tovihoto stated that, while the government and the department were working hard to provide a better and more reliable power supply, non-payment of bills by consumers was a serious issue, resulting in huge revenue losses.
Furthermore, the adviser also stated that the department would be developing an official social media page/account to handle public complaints and to keep customers informed about load shedding and other power-related issues.

 

Addressing the gathering, chief engineer (D&R), Er. Moa Aier urged for everyone's cooperation so that the department could deliver better and more consistent services.

He thanked CIHSR for providing the space for the upgraded sub-station to be installed.

He also stated that the district would need to update or install a minimum of 50 to 60 MVA substations in the next five years as the number of users in Dimapur grows.
