Kohima, July 10, 2019:

For the first time, the Under-15 Girl’s Football team from Nagaland will represent India at the International-level football tournament Gothai Cup in Sweden.

The Gothai Cup is one of the world’s largest International Youth Football tournaments which is scheduled to be held from 14-20 July at Gothenburg in Sweden.

A total of 21 members including 14 players, Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, Zale Neikha, along with two team coaches and other officials will be leaving for Sweden tomorrow from Dimapur.

In a sendoff programme held at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima on July 9, the Advisor expressed hoped that the Nagaland team will be able to compete professionally at the highest level with other teams and showcase their talents as sportspersons.

He said it is an achievement for the team to represent the country and a platform to show the uniqueness of the Naga identity and culture during the opening ceremony of the tournament.

As part of the year long centenary celebration of the legendary Naga footballer Dr T Ao and also to help the players gain exposure, the Youth Resources and Sports department has taken the initiative to send the team to the international tournament to showcase their talent in front of the world.

Besides taking part in the tournament, the Nagaland team will also be representing India in the parade of nations during the opening ceremony. The team will be playing its first match on 15 July.
