Kohima, August 6, 2019:

Yung Aung has been named as the chairman/president of the NSCN (K) group operating in Myanmar. The group issued a press release on Monday informing about Aung’s elevation from his previous position as the acting chairman/acting president of the outfit.

A statement issued by the group, said: "In accordance with the Yehzabo (constitution), of the NSCN, GPRN, and as consented and endorsed unanimously by all the party members, the National Socialist Council hereby elevates Mr. Yung Aung from his current post of acting chairman/acting president to the post of chairman/president of the National Socialist Council of the Nagaland/Government of the People's Republic of Nagaland (NSCN/GPRN)."

Back in August, 2018, the National Socialist Council of Nagaland's Khaplang faction (NSCN-K) had elected a new chief to replace chairman Khango Konyak. 47-year-old Yung Aung had been chosen as the acting chairman of the rebel outfit.

Konyak had been found guilty under three conditions, the foremost being ‘absolute control of power and functions without collective leadership, non-distribution of power and functions, exposing a one-man-government policy, which is completely in violation of the Party Yehzabo (Constitution) and discipline’.

Recent media reports claimed that the Tatmadow (Burmese armed forces) launched a crackdown against NSCN-K camps and training facilities at Taga in Myanmar’s Sagaing region, ending the ceasefire agreement signed with Myanmar government in 2012.
