5 killed in Serum Institute plant fire in Pune

GUWAHATI: At least 5 people have died in the fire that broke out in the Serum Institute of India (SII) earlier today. "Four people were evacuated from the building but when it came under control, five bodies were found by our jawans," confirmed Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol, commenting on the Serum Institute plant fire.

This has also been confirmed by CEO Adar Poonawala, who tweeted, "We have just received some distressing updates; upon further investigation we have learnt that there has unfortunately been some loss of life at the incident. We are deeply saddened and offer our deepest condolences to the family members of the departed."

The CEO had earlier confirmed that the manufacture of the 'Covaxin' produced by his company shall not be affected by the Serum Institute plant fire.

According to reports, Maharashtra's Deputy CM Ajit Pawar will visit the Serum Institute fire site at 7:30 pm today.

Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray in a tweet said that the fire at the Serum premises was on the BCG vaccine unit (under-construction), not the COVISHIELD manufacturing unit.

"All six people who were stuck in the unit have been rescued," the CM further informed in his tweet.
