Andaman and Nicobar Police intercepted a boat carrying at least 66 Rohingyas near Tarmugli Island, around 34 kilometers away from the restricted North Sentinel Island.
Police said that they detained 24 men, 27 women and 15 children, who were reportedly travelling to Malaysia from Bangladesh. According to reports, the boat had left from Bangladesh over a fortnight ago. Based on specific input, the Police was able to intercept the boat with the Rohingya passengers.

The Andaman Police are investigating the matter. It may be mentioned here that neighboring Bangladesh and India have been planning deportation of Rohingyas who had fled Myanmar, following ethnic cleansing in the Buddhist state of Rakhine.

More than 700,000 Rohingya had fled to Bangladesh since a 2017 crackdown by the Myanmar army, according to UN agencies.
