Gul Muhammad Mir, a BJP leader from Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district was shot dead by suspected terrorists in Verinag area of south Kashmir on Saturday, less than 48 hours before Shopian and Pulwama districts of Anantnag parliamentary constituency go to polls. Mir was the BJP Vice-President in the district.

The BJP party has alleged that his security was recently withdrawn by the state administration, currently run by Governor Satya Pal Malik.

Police have said that the three suspected militants came to his house in Nowgam Verinag area and asked for his car keys. The suspected terrorists then pumped the BJP leader full of bullets while they were driving away in his car.

Many senior political leaders from the Kashmir Valley have condemned the incident including former Kashmir Chief Minister Omah Abdullah and PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti.
