Amethi, May 26, 2019:

In a sensational incident, a BJP worker who campaigned for Smriti Irani during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, was shot dead late on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Surendra Singh, a former village head in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi (where Smriti Irani contested against Rahul Gandhi). Singh worked closely with Irani in the run-up to the elections.

Police have said that the BJP worker was shot in his house by two men and later breathed his last at a hospital in Lucknow where he was being taken for treatment.

Although the motive of the crime is not clear, Amethi Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar has said that he could have been killed because of an old dispite or a political dispute. The police have further confirmed that a few suspects have been taken into custody.

Smriti Irani has left for Amethi after hearing of her follower's demise and will be meet Surendra Singh's family later in the day.

Surendra Singh was the former head of Baraulia village, quit the post to participate in the BJP election campaign for the Amethi candidate Smritu Irani.

He was a close aide of Smriti Irani and took part in many campaigns for the actress-turned-politician.

It may be mentioned that Smriti Irani defeated Congress President Rahul Gandhi by over 55,000 votes in Amethi, a bastion of the Congress party, in one of the biggest upsets in the 2019 elections.

It may be mentioned that the Congress party had not lost Amethi in about three decades, except in 1998. Rahul Gandhi had been winning in Amethi since 2004, his first election.
