Despite uproar in the Parliament against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill, the Bill has been tabled by Amit Shah in the Lower House with an overwhelming 293 votes. Only 82 votes were counted against its re-introduction.

The Bill that was tabled by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeks to grant citizenship to the non-Muslim migrants from the neighboring countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Ahead of its introduction, bedlam erupted in the Lok Sabha, with the opposition even accusing the Home Minister of having Hitler-like tendencies.

The Congress leader, Shashi Tharoor, opposing the Bill, stated that the religion cannot determine nationhood, and further accused the Bill of being "unconstitutional."
It is to be mentioned here that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is being vehemently opposed by the civil societies, student bodies, and indigenous organizations.

In the state of Assam, which will not be safeguarded by the Bill as it it does not have any special provisions, the protests have reached fever-pitch. Organizations like the KMSS, AJYCP, AASU, etc, have been opposing the Bill tooth-and-nail. Students of Universities across the state have also been opposing the Bill, and have demanded its immediate withdrawal.
However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is said to be firmly in support of the Bill, and will tabulate it in the Rajya Sabha tomorrow.
