BSF Destroys 64 Hemp Fields in West Bengal's Cooch Behar

Guwahati, December 30, 2019:

Troops of the Guwahati Frontier of Border Security Force (BSF) carried out a joint operation for destruction of illegal cultivation of hemp in the bordering area of Dinhata (in Coochbehar).

On December 29, troops of the BSF under Guwahati Frontier carried out a joint operation for destruction of illegal cultivation of hemp. The operation was also joined by members of police, excise department and civil authorities, under the supervision of the BDO of Dinhata.

The operation was carried out at Petbhatha, Sewdagudi, Bajejama, Bajejama Paschim, Belwadi Bazar, Chaudagudi and B J Jura under Dinhata Police Station in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal.

During the operation, 64 patches of cultivated land consisting approximately 43,000 plants of hemp were destroyed.

Hemp, (Cannabis sativa), also called industrial hemp, plant of the family Cannabaceae cultivated for its fibre (bast fibre) or its edible seeds.

Hemp is sometimes confused with the cannabis plants that serve as sources of the drug marijuana and the drug preparation hashish.

Although all three products—hemp, marijuana, and hashish—contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a compound that produces psychoactive effects in humans, the variety of cannabis cultivated for hemp has only small amounts of THC relative to that grown for the production of marijuana or hashish.
