Kolkata, January 12, 2020:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) will have no effect on the language, culture and demography of the Northeastern part of the country.

Urging the youth of Kolkata to make people aware about the goodness of CAA, Modi said that it was their duty to help the ones who have been misled by a section for political gains.

While addressing a gathering comprising mainly of students, the Prime Minister clarified that CAA’s intention was to provide citizenship to non-Muslims who have been subjected to religious persecution in the neighboring Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. It would not impact the language or cultural identity of the Northeast, he reiterated.

Hinting at the continued agitation in the Northeast, particularly Assam, he said that there was a deliberate attempt by some people who wanted to mislead the students and youth for ‘political gains’.

It may be mentioned here that Assam has been at the forefront of the CAA agitation, led by several student and social bodies, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), being the most prominent one.

Speaking on the lines of the Prime Minister’s statement at Belur in Kolkata, AASU Chief Adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said, “After the historic Assam movement, the Assam Accord was signed and according to the Accord, we took the load of all the Bangladeshis till 1971. So, beyond 1971, we cannot take any Bangladeshi’s load. Considering the national and international agreement and human interest consideration, the Accord was signed. So, now Assam will be impacted for sure after the government decided to provide citizenship to all those who came after 1971. We cannot take the load of a single Bangladeshi, be it a Hindu or Muslim.”

He also reiterated that since the Constitution does not provide for citizenship on the basis of religion, the CAA is communal in nature. “Two basic things - they violated the Assam Accord and it is communal and unconstitutional. Even the Supreme Court had earlier said that due to the large scale influx of illegal foreigners, there is external and internal disturbance in Assam. So, there have been effects earlier and it will continue to impact Assam,” said the AASU leader.

It may be mentioned here that CAA has been continuously opposed by majority of the people of the country. As many as 25 deaths have been reported in the widespread agitations across the country.
