New Delhi, January 9, 2020:

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde, on Thursday, observed that the objective should be to bring about peace while criticizing a petition asking to declare the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) as “constitutional” and that all the states should be instructed to implement this.

CJI Bobde also said that such petitions do not help when the motive should be to bring peace during difficult times in India. He made this observation based on the plea filed by Advocate Vineet Dhanda and said, “Object should be to bring about peace. Such petitions don’t help that.”

Advocate Dhanda had filed the petition asking to declare the CAA 'constitutional' at a time when majority of the people have termed the same as 'unconstitutional'.

The apex court would hear petitions challenging the validity of the Citizenship Amendment Act as soon as violence stopped, informed Bobde.

It may be mentioned here that the CAA has drawn flak from majority of the people. It fast-tracks naturalisation for illegal immigrants from six non-Muslim minority religious groups (in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh) who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

Protests have been going on across the country demanding the scrapping of the CAA for its ‘unconstitutional’ nature.
