The number of coronavirus (or COVID-19) cases in India continue to soar, as the country has now reported more than 1,000 cases of the virus. The death toll, meanwhile, has risen to 27. The total number of cases in the country is 1,024, including 48 foreign nationals and 96 people who have been cured or discharged.
Meanwhile, 12 new Coronavirus positive cases have been reported in Maharashtra, taking the total tally to 215. At the same time, hand sanitisers & masks worth Rs 27 lakh have been raided & recovered by Mumbai Police in Kandivali, as the demand for these commodities continues to skyrocket amid the mass hysteria over the virus.
The State of West Bengal has reported its second death from the COVID-19 contagion. Sunita Devi Singh, 44, of Oden Road, Kalimpong was admitted at NBMC and Hospital Isolation ward on March 26, where she tested POSITIVE for the virus. She breathed her last on Monday. It may be recalled that West Bengal reported its first case of coronovirus death in Kolkata on 23 March. A 57-year-old resident of Dum Dum was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata on 16 March. The patient tested positive for the disease on 21 March.

Meanwhile, the economy is showing signs of damage amid the coronavirus pandemic, as the Sensex has tanked 1,106.76 pts to 28,708.83 in the opening session. The Nifty has slumped 270.95 pts to 8,389.30. The manufacturing sector in the country is also suffering. Along with other high-profile companies, Godfrey Phillips India has also suspended operations at factories and plants amid the skyrocketing number of corona positive cases and deaths.
Meanwhile, the United States has reported 142,178 cases so far, far surpassing the numbers in States like Italy and China, where the virus first broke out. Italy, however, has reported the most number of deaths at 10,779. Spain has reported 6,803 deaths. In view of this threat, United States President Donald J Trump extends social distancing guidelines till April 30.
New York, the economic nerve centre of the US, continues to be worst hit due to an outbreak of the COVID-19. The State has so far reported more than 1,000 deaths. The virus is also spreading at an unprecedented rate in neighboring Mexico, which has reported 145 fresh cases and 4 deaths in the past 24 hours.
In a positive development, China has reported "only" 31 new cases of the virus yesterday, down from 45 a day earlier. Mainland China reported 31 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, including one locally transmitted infection, the country's National Health Commission said. Hubei province, the epicentre of the disease, has not reported a single new case for the sixth consecutive day, it has been reported.
India's neighboring country Nepal has also taken precautions to check the spread of the virus. The Nepalese government has now extended ban on all international flights till April 15 as a measure to prevent to stall the spread of the novel coronavirus.
