The number of coronavirus cases has reached 3,648 in Maharashtra, the most affected state both in terms of infections and deaths.

At least 26 Indian Navy personnel in Mumbai have tested positive for the viral infection. The personnel are part of the INS Angre, a logistics and support facility of the Western Naval Command.

All 26 sailors who were tested positive for the coronavirus remain “asymptomatic”, the Navy has confirmed, and they are being monitored at INHS Asvini, a shore establishment. The cases were detected after rigorous testing carried out by Western Naval Command after one sailor tested positive on April 7.

Global Figures:

The number of deaths from the pandemic rose to 160,767, according to a tally from official sources compiled by Worldometer. More than 2,330,883 declared cases have been registered in 193 countries and territories since the epidemic first came to light in Wuhan, China. 599,961 people have made recoveries from the virus. There are 1,571,308 active cases and 55,280 (or 4%) people are in a serious/critical condition.

The United States of America (US) has reported the highest number of cases at 738,913 and 39,015. Spain with 194,416 cases and 20,639 deaths is the second worst hit country.

Meanwhile, the director of a maximum-security laboratory in China's coronavirus ground-zero city of Wuhan has rejected claims that it could be the source of the outbreak, calling it "impossible".

Beijing has come under increasing pressure over transparency in its handling of the pandemic, with the US probing whether the virus actually originated in a virology institute with a high-security biosafety laboratory. This was attested by the US President Donald J Trump recently.
