Coronavirus Update: Indian Cases Cross 17,000; 2,546 Patients Cured & 543 Deaths Reported

New Delhi, April 20, 2020:

India has crossed the 17,000-mark for coronavirus cases while the death toll has risen to 543. Of the total 17,265 cases, 14,175 are active, while 2,546 are cured/discharged/migrated.

1612 cases were reported across the country on Sunday and the states of Maharashtra (552), Gujarat (367) and Uttar Pradesh (179) registered their biggest surges yet.

On Sunday, Maharashtra recorded 12 new deaths, followed by Gujarat (10), Madhya Pradesh (5) and Telangana (3). Delhi, Rajasthan and Kerala recorded two deaths each.

Notably, 36% of the country's coronavirus cases are in Maharashtra and Delhi alone. Maharashtra has reported 4,200 cases of the COVID-19, while New Delhi has registered 2,003 cases.

It is pertinent to mention here that today, India will take the first step towards relaxing lockdown measures which were imposed on March 24 to contain the spread of the COVID-19. However, strict restrictions will continue in districts declared COVID-19 hotspots.

International Update:

Worldometers reports that the COVID-19 has affected 2,407,414 people across the world; while 625,199 people have recovered, 165,073 people have succumbed due to complications from the disease. There are 1,617,142 active cases, with 54,222 in serious/critical condition.

Among the countries, the US has reported the most number of cases at 764,265 and 40,565 deaths. Spain is the second-worst hit country with 198,674 cases (and 20,453 deaths) of the virus. Italy is not too far behind and has reported 178,972 cases and 23,660 deaths.
