The Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the dastardly attacks in island nation Sri Lanka that killed 321 people (including thirty-eight foreign nationals) and left more than 500 people injured on Easter Sunday.
A senior Minister informed Parliament that a probe suggested that the attacks were carried out by local Islamic extremists in retaliation against the shooting in New Zealand mosques. Forty suspects have been arrested so far in connection with the blasts that left the entire world shellshocked. Sri Lankans are in a state of and observed a day of mourning on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, ISIS through its propaganda 'Amaq' news agency stated that: "The executors of the attack that targeted citizens of coalition states and Christians in Sri Lanka two days ago were with the group", according to the Site Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist activities.
This latest show of strength by the terror outfit shows that although the Islamic State may no longer control a swath of territory across Iraq and Syria, the coordinated attacks in Sri Lanka demonstrate that the resilient group can still sow carnage beyond the borders of its former “caliphate.”
It is to be mentioned that a series of eight blasts - mainly targeted at Churches and high-end hotels - rocked Sri Lanka on Sunday while many devotees were participating in Easter celebrations
