New Delhi, March 19, 2020:

Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Thursday took oath as Rajya Sabha member amid uproar by Opposition members.

As Ranjan Gogoi reached out to take oath as the Rajya Sabha member, Opposition members started raising slogans against his membership. The scene compelled Chairman Venkaiah Naidu to make an announcement that it was unbecoming of Members.

As soon as Naidu made announcement for the swearing-in to begin for Gogoi as nominated member, Congress, DMK, CPM, IUML and others shouted slogans.

After taking oath, Ranjan Gogoi accepted greetings of all the members present in the House saying "Namaste" with folded hands. All the members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies welcomed him in Rajya Sabha.

It may be mentioned here that the retired Justice was nominated to fill the vacancy, which arose after the retirement of nominated MP KTS Tulsi, who in turn, won a renomination from the Congress quota.

The President of India via a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on March 16 nominated Ranjan Gogoi to the council of state to fill the vacancy caused due to retirement of nominated MP KTS Tulsi.
