Darjeeling, January 6, 2020:

Gorkhas ventured into a 40 km walkathon demanding the scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and withdrawal of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).

Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader Binay Tamag led the 40 km walkathon downhill from Kurseong to Sukna in order to oppose the central government’s decision to implement the CAA. The walkathon was held by the Tamang faction of the GJM along the National Highway 55 and was joined by hundreds of CAA protesters.

Tamang reiterated the concerns over the CAA and the NRC. He said that they would never let the CAA or the NRC to be implemented in the hills as it would impact the Gorkhas.

Another protester demanded that the government should inform about the development around their main demand, Gorkhaland. He also expressed his disappointment with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for failing to do anything about the demands of the Gorkhas.

It may be mentioned here that this is the second major march held by the Tamang faction of the GJM in the hills. Earlier, it had held a rally from Darjeeling to Kurseong. Binay Tamang has given the credit to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, who had recently carried out a massive rally against CAA.

The 40 km walkathon started around 9 AM and reached Sukna in the evening. The GJM leader said that the protests would continue until the CAA is scrapped. On January 12, the GJM will be holding a 28 km rally from Pedong to Dambar Chowk in Kalimpong. The GJM will be joining with the Trinamool in another rally scheduled on January 22.
