India COVID-19 Cases Rise to 4,789; Death Toll Climbs to 124 & 352 Cured

New Delhi, April 7, 2020:

According to the latest official figures, as many as 4,789 people across India have been infected by the novel coronavirus or COVID-19 so far, and 124 of the patients have died. However, in a positive development 352 of the patients have been cured/discharged from hospitals.

Maharashtra remains the state with the highest number of cases, with 1,018 with at least 48 of those having died due to complications.

Meanwhile, 25 more Covid-19 positive cases reported in Delhi today, confirmed the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's office. The total number of positive cases in Delhi stands at 550, and of them, 331 cases are related to Nizamuddin Markaz, while 170 cases have foreign travel/contact history and 49 cases are under investigation for further information.

In the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Home State of Gujarat the toll climbed to 175 after ten more cases were detected today.

Meanwhile, the National Task Force for COVID-I9 management has constituted five groups to identify research priorities and quickly initiate studies on them, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said on Tuesday.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has meanwhile confirmed that a total of 1,14,015 samples have been tested for Covid-19 as of 9 pm today.

At the same time, the Supreme Court Tuesday directed all states and Union Territories to ensure through Director Generals of Police (DGPs) that prisoners released from jails get safe transit, so that they can reach their homes amid the lockdown due to coronavirus.

The Supreme Court in March had directed that each State/Union Territory shall constitute a High Powered Committee comprising of Chairman of the State Legal Services Committee, the Principal Secretary (Home/Prison) by whatever designation is known as, Director General of Prison(s), to determine which class of prisoners can be released on parole or an interim bail for such period as may be thought appropriate.

“For instance, the State/Union Territory could consider the release of prisoners who have been convicted or are undertrial for offences for which prescribed punishment is up to 7 years or less, with or without fine and the prisoner has been convicted for a lesser number of years than the maximum”, the apex Court had said.

Globally, worldometers.info reports that the number of cases has risen to 1,397,165, and 80,930 people have died so far. 298,513 of the patients have recovered from the disease so far.

USA, with 385,838 cases, leads in the total number of cases reported per country. Spain has now overtaken Italy and has reported 140,511 cases so far. Italy, however, still leads the number of deaths at 17,127.
