India Positive COVID-19 Cases Rise to 5,865; Death Toll Climbs to 169 & 477 Cured

New Delhi, April 9, 2020:

According to the latest official figures, 5,865 positive cases across India have been reported so far, and 169 of the patients have died. However, in a positive development 477 of the patients have been cured/discharged from hospitals.

There are a total of 5,218 active cases in India currently. Around 80 percent of the country's total coronavirus cases are said to be concentrated in 62 districts, a majority of which form the country’s top metropolitan areas.

Maharashtra is the worst-hit state by coronavirus with cases rising to almost 1,400 on Thursday. Mumbai, also India's financial capital, has reported nearly 750 cases. Of thr 162 cases reported today, 143 are from Mumbai, according to a PTI report.

The coronavirus death toll in Pune rose to 20 on Thursday after two more patients succumbed to the disease. On Wednesday, 10 deaths were reported from Pune district. The district reported a total of 197 coronavirus positive cases until Wednesday evening.

Chandigarh has reported 18 cases and there has been no change in the number of coronavirus positive cases since Thursday morning. Delhi has 669 cases, while 9 have so far died, as per the Union health ministry data on Thursday evening. The total cases include 426 people who took part in a Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Nizamuddin area in March.

Gujarat has reported 179 positive cases as on Thursday evening with 53 cases from Ahmedabad. It has reported 16 deaths so far.

Haryana has a total of 169 positive cases with Gurugram having 29 cases of coronavirus, the highest in Haryana, as per district-wise data from the Union health ministry. Three deaths have been reported till now in Haryana.

Srinagar has reported 28 cases so far. Twenty-four new COVID-19 cases were detected in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, taking the total number of infected persons to 184.

The overall tally of coronavirus positive cases in Karnataka stood at 181 on Thursday evening with at least five deaths so far.

The number of coronavirus cases has risen to 259 in Madhya Pradesh, according to the Union Health Ministry, with 16 deaths until Thursday evening. In the last 24 hours, MP recorded three deaths.

The total number of cases in Rajasthan have risen to 383 on Thursday evening along with three fatalities. Tamil Nadu's Chennai topped the number of positive cases with 156 followed by Coimbatore 60, Dindigul 46, Tirunelveli 40, Theni. Hyderabad has recorded at least 113 positive cases of coronavirus, while the number of cases rose to 442 in Telangana on Thursday evening. As part of measures to combat COVID-19, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has set up 12 containment clusters in different areas of the city.

West Bengal has overall reported 103 COVID-19 cases of coronavirus until Thursday evening. Assam has reported a total of 29 cases. A fresh case was reported by Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the evening.

Meanwhile, Odisha has become the first State in the country to extend the lockdown post April 14. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday announced that the State Government has decided to extend the lockdown till April 30.
