India recorded 61,408 new cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) and 836 deaths in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry informed this morning. The latest increase in the COVID-19 cases takes India’s tally to 3,106,349, including 2,338,036 recovered patients.

India’s coronavirus cases (Covid-19) crossed the 3 million mark and it still remains the third worst-hit country in the world after the US and Brazil, according to the Union health ministry’s data on Monday.

The country had crossed the 1 million mark on July 16, the 1.5 million milestone on July 28 and two million on August 6. The number of Covid-19 cases in India crossed three million on August 22. Last week, 397,277 Covid-19 cases, including more than 5,700 deaths, were added to the country’s infection tally.

The health ministry tweeted today, “This is because of effective implementation of Centre led policies ensuring efficient clinical management in hospital settings for critical patients, and supervised Home Isolation for moderate and mild ones.”

The five most affected states by a total tally of cases are Maharashtra (682,383), Tamil Nadu (379,000), Andhra Pradesh (345,216), Karnataka (271,876), and Uttar Pradesh (182,459). Bihar's coronavirus caseload rises to 122,000 as 2,247 more people test positive, death toll mounts to 610 with 9 new fatalities. Meanwhile, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal suggested that Delhi Metro should be resumed in a phased manner of trial basis. As of today, there are 161,466 COVID cases in the national capital.
