New Delhi, October 14, 2019:

An Indian nun from Kerala, Mariam Thresia has been canonized by the Pope in Vatican City on Monday.

Sister Mariam Thresia, who spent nearly all her life caring for the poor and healing the sick, has been given sainthood in Vatican City.

Sister Mariam Thresia is the founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family. She is undergoing the ceremonies of sainthood by the Catholic Church in Rome’s St Peter’s Square.

Besides sister Thresia, the others are British Cardinal John Newman, Swiss sister Marguerite Bays, Brazilian sister Dulce Lopes and Italian sister Giuseppina Vannini.

Sister Thresia is the fourth who attained sainthood from Kerala. Earlier, Vatican had declared three Kerala-born Indian Catholics, including Sister Alphonsa, Sister Euphrasia, and Father Kuriakose Elias Chavara, as Saints.

Ahead of her canonization, Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan on Sunday met Pope Francis in Vatican City. The minister presented him the copy of 'Bhagavad Gita According to Gandhi' and 'Caparisoned Elephant' of Kerala temple festivals.

The minister is currently on a two-day visit to the Vatican City in Rome to attend the Canonisation ceremony of Sister Mariam Thresia.
