Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has voiced out against the central government’s move to implement a nation-wide National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).
JIH vice president Muhammad Salim Engineer, reportedly, said that the two citizenship exercises all over the country are a ‘deliberate’ diversion of priorities by the government to hide its failures on the economy and other core issues and development.

He added that risking the fate of 135 crore people was unjustified and the NRC and CAB would cause a huge financial burden on the taxpayer. He opined that the government should adopt other known procedures and laws to identify foreigners or illegal immigrants.
Terming the Assam NRC as a ‘failure’, JIH said that the government is still clueless about what to do with the excluded people. It may be mentioned here that Assam NRC had leftover 19 lakh people out of the final draft.
The vice president also said that a nation-wide NRC would only cause inconvenience to citizens, especially minorities and marginalized communities.
