The Jammu and Kashmir administration has reopened its doors to tourists from today, more than two months after asking tourists and Amarnath pilgrims to leave the State. The Government had asked the visitors to leave just two days before abrogating Article 370 and 35A, which granted special privileges to Kashmiris.

20,000 to 25,000 visitors left the site after the alert was issued by the Government and it was peak tourism period at that time. It may be mentioned here that telephone and internet services were suspended and Srinagar was put on lockdown after the announcement was made.

Moreover, security was heavily beefed up ahead of the move by the Centre. 1.74 lakh tourists visited Kashmir in June, followed by 1.52 lakh, including 3,403 foreigners, in July, according to official figures.

It is pertinent to mention here that the tourism sector of Kashmir is the backbone of its economy. Popularly known as the "Paradise on Earth", Jammu and Kashmir is world famous for its scenic splendour, snow-capped mountains, plentiful wildlife, and exquisite locations.

Amarnath and Vaishno Devi attract a large number of pilgrims every year. Dal Lake, Kashmir Valley, Khardung La Pass, Gulmarg, Shalimar Bagh are some of the major attractions of the state.
