Justice for Nirbhaya as Court Orders Hanging of Rapists on Jan 22

New Delhi, January 7, 2020:

A Delhi court on Tuesday pronounced death sentences to all the four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case. The execution has been scheduled for 7 am on January 22.

Reportedly, the Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora, while pronouncing the death sentence, said the convicts can use their legal remedies within 14 days.

According to the lawyer of convicts, AP Singh, said they will file a curative petition in the Supreme Court. The convicts were produced before the court through video conferencing.

Four of the convicts were sentenced to death by a trial court in September 2013, and the verdict confirmed by the Delhi High Court in March 2014 and upheld by the Supreme Court in May 2017. This review petition, however, was dismissed.

All the six accused of Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case were arrested and charged with sexual assault and murder. One of the accused was a minor and appeared before a juvenile justice court. Another accused committed suicide in Tihar Jail.
