NEW DELHI: Senior Congressman has shared a rare letter that 'Father of the Nation' Mahatma Gandhi wrote to his close aide Jawaharlal Nehru.

At a time when communal tensions across India are at an all-time high, it has come to light that 'Bapu' Mahatma Gandhi had written to Jawaharlal Nehru when the latter had begun fasting to protest the communal tensions post-independence. Gandhi, in his letter to the first Prime Minister, urged him to end his fast and reassured Nehru. This letter stands as a shining example of the bond that existed between two of the founders of modern India.

Notably, this was Bapu's last letter to Nehru before he was assassinated by Hindu fanatic Nathuram Godse on 30 January 1948.

Sharing Gandhi's last letter to Nehru on Twitter, veteran Congressman and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh said,"Gandhi's last letter to Nehru — 18 Jan 1948. Unpublicised, Nehru had not taken food for a day or two as a reaction to the communal tensions in Delhi. Somehow the Mahatma got to know of it and advised the PM to put an end to the 'fast'. Gandhi also puns on the word Jawahar."

Gandhi and Nehru had an enduring relationship that began when Gandhi first met Nehru at the annual meeting of the Indian National Congress in the year 1916 at Lucknow.

On the night of January 30, 1948, the day Gandhi was assassinated, Nehru gave these words to the millions of hearts: "…The light has gone out, I said, and yet I was wrong. For the light that shown in this country was no ordinary light. The light that has illuminated this country for these many years will illumine this country for many more years and a thousand years later that light will still be seen in this country and the world will see it and it will give solace to innumerable hearts."
