Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee weighed in on final draft of the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) which was published on Saturday.
The TMC Chief said that the Government must ensure that genuine citizens are not left out of the final NRC draft.
Taking to Twitter, she wrote, "we are shocked to see that names of more than 1 lakh Gorkha people have been excluded from the list."
The West Bengal Chief Minister further lamented that thousands and thousands of genuine Indians, including those of CRPF and other jawans, family members of former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, have been excluded from the list. She further alleged that the Assam NRC is "guided by an ulterior motive."
Mamata also extended solidarity to the Bengali-speaking "brothers and sisters" who were excluded from the NRC. "My heart goes out to all those, especially the large number of Bengali speaking brothers and sisters, who are made to suffer because of this botched-up process", she wrote.
After publication of the NRC, Prateek Hajela, the State Coordinator, NRC said, “A total of 3,11,21,004 persons have been found eligible for inclusion in final draft, leaving out 19,06,657 persons, including those who did not submit their claims.
“Those not satisfied with outcome can file appeals before the Foreigners Tribunals”, he added.
It may be mentioned here that the NRC authority has declared that the non-inclusion of a person’s name in the NRC does not amount to his/her being declared a foreigner.
