Guwahati, April 27, 2019:

The Indian Navy’s Lieutenant Commander DS Chauhan lost his life on Friday while saving 1,500 others onboard INS Vikramaditya when a fire broke out in one of the compartments.

The fire broke out on board aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya in the morning when the ship was entering the harbor in Karwar. The Indian braveheart led the firefighting efforts in the affected compartment.

As per the official statement, Chauhan suffered a loss of consciousness owing to the smoke and fumes during the firefighting efforts. He was immediately evacuated to Naval Hospital at INHS Patanjali for medical attention. However, the officer could not be revived.

An inquiry has been started to investigate the circumstances leading up to his death.

Meanwhile, the Navy Spokesperson has paid tribute to the brave in the official tweeter handle as, “We salute his courage and sense of duty and will make every effort to ensure that his supreme sacrifice does not go in vain. We shall be with his family forever and at all times - Admiral Sunil Lanba CNS, all ranks and families of #IndianNavy 3/3.”
