Guwahati, September 19, 2019:

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee drew attention to the issue of citizens' register during her meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah today.

Mamata Banerjee told Shah that the exercise -- which left over nineteen lakh people in Assam 'stateless' -- is not required in Bengal.

She told media persons that handed over a letter to Amit Shah and told him that of the 19 Lakh people left out of NRC, many are in fact, bonafide citizens of the country, and the list had left out many genuine voters. Mamata, in the letter, told Shah that this needs to be looked into.

Yesterday, Mr Shah had reiterated the government's plan to introduce National Registry of Citizens throughout the country. In the build up to the 2019 General Elections, Shah had promised that every single illegal Bangladeshi "spy" would be evicted.
