Over 12,000 Rohingyas affected,11 killed in flash floods & landslides in Bangladesh

DHAKA: Over 12,000 Rohingyas have been affected and at least 11 killed in flash floods and landslides in Bangladesh's Cox Bazar region, reports said.

Among the 11 dead, six were Rohingyas who were killed on July 27 in the Balukhali and Palong Khali camps, while five locals were killed in a camp in Teknaf on July 28.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 2,500 shelters were damaged or destroyed in the flash floods and landslides in the area.

According to Refugee Commissioner Shah Rezwan Hayat, more than 10,000 Rohingyas have been temporarily relocated to safer areas after their shelters were destroyed by flash floods and landslides.

Meanwhile, around 7,000 locals outside the camp have also been taken to a safe place.

The area received more than 300 mm of rain between July 26-27, nearly half of the monthly rainfall for the month of July.

Over a million Rohingya refugees are residing in Bangladesh currently.

The majority of them are taking shelters in 34 refugee camps in the country's Cox's Bazar region.
