Congress President Rahul Gandhi (popularly known as 'RaGa') on Thursday said that he will not participate in the process of electing a new chief for the country's oldest political party.
Speaking to media persons in Parliament, Gandhi said: "I will not participate in the process of electing the new President as it will make things more complicated."
Gandhi offered to step down as President on May 25 following the party's dismal performance in the Lok Sabha elections.
His offer was rejected unanimously by the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party's highest decision making body.
RaGa had earlier landed in controversy after the Congress leader was caught using his phone during President Ramnath Kovind's joint parliamentary address today. The Congress leader seemed completely disinterested and was seen typing on his phone for 24 minutes during the President’s one-hour speech.
RaGa was even seen talking to his mother Sonia Gandhi for twenty minutes while the speech was going on. His nonchalant attitude even drew some sharp glances from his mother, but the Wayanad MP, RaGa, seemed highly uninterested in the proceedings.
At one point, the entire auditorium broke into applause when President Kovind mentioned the surgical strikes, Balakot and Uri, (even Sonia Gandhi thumped her table in appreciation), Rahul kept staring elsewhere.
The Congress leader's future in the party remains in doubt following his party's defeat to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP secured a thumping win by winning 303 of the Lok Sabha seats.
Rahul had later proposed to step down from the party Presidentship, but was later persuaded not to do so by Congress leaders.
