Guwahati, April 10, 2019:

In a surprising development, the BJP party has switched colors from the traditional saffron to green in the Kashmir valley. For the past several days, BJP’s candidate from Srinagar Parliamentary seat, Khalid Jehangir, has been issuing advertisements in green as part of his election campaign. But shockingly, the advertisements and posters are in green instead of the BJP’s saffron.

The advertisements have been designed on a green background and the color of BJP’s symbol, the lotus, has been changed from saffron to black. When asked about the unusual green color in the BJP posters, Jehangir said that he does not see colors through the prism of politics. He has also informed that forty Billboard designed in green have been erected across the constituency which is spread over three districts: Srinagar, Budgam, and Ganderbal.

It may be mentioned that the color green is associated with the religion of Islam, whereas the BJP is seen as a ‘Hindu nationalist party.’

Despite the BJP’s growing support base in Kashmir, it is highly unlikely that Jehangir, who is contesting his first election, will win the election as he is pitted against political heavyweight Farooq Abdullah.

With the Kashmir Valley set to head to the polls during the first phase on 11 May, it remains to be seen whether the green color will change the saffron party’s fortunes in the upcoming election.
