Newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party MP Smriti Irani on Sunday carried the mortal remains of here aide Surendra Singh on her shoulders after he was shot dead on Saturday night.
Irani, who had praised the deceased numerous times during the campaign for his zeal during the campaigns, rushed to Amethi as soon as she heard that he had breathed his last at a Lucknow hospital.
Footage of the actress-turned-politician lending her shoulder to carry the remains of Singh, 50, with a gaunt expression on her face, has gone viral on various social media platforms.
It may be mentioned that the deceased was the head of Baraulia village, but gave up his post to campaign for the BJP candidate, Irani. He was shot at around 11.30 pm Saturday. Members of his family have alleged that he was shot over political differences.
Although the motive of the crime is not clear, Amethi Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar has said that he could have been killed because of an old dispite or a political dispute. The police have further confirmed that a few suspects have been taken into custody.
