Sunil Arora on Sunday took the charge as the country's 23rd Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) after he was appointed by President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday.
Besides the Lok Sabha elections, the new CEC will also oversee the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Maharashtra, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim that are scheduled to be held next year.
Arora succeeded Om Prakash Rawat who retired on Saturday.
It may be mentioned that, earlier Arora had been the information and broadcasting secretary, and the secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
