J&K, August 5, 2019:

Amit Shah's proposal to bifurcate Jammu and Kashmir and revoke the Article 370, which provides constitutional safeguards to Muslims, has been met with a hue-and-cry not only at the Rajya Sabha, but all across the nation, and leading Kashmiri politicians, like former CM Mehbooba Mufti (served as CM from 4 April 2016 to 19 June 2018), have been quick to react.

Mehbooba Mufti, who has allegedly been placed under house arrest, along with another leading politician Omar Abdullah, took to Twitter to express her opposition to the NDA Government's move.

"The manner in which they want to bulldoze our special identity is illegal & makes India an occupational force", she wrote.

Moreover, she has said that today is a dark day in Indian democracy. In another tweet, Mufti wrote that "Today marks the darkest day in Indian democracy. Decision of J&K leadership to reject 2 nation theory in 1947 & align with India has backfired. Unilateral decision of GOI to scrap Article 370 is illegal & unconstitutional which will make India an occupational force in J&K."

Mufti, who has been an active force on Twitter today, again wrote that the Government's move will "exacerbate the alienation Kashmiris feel."

It is to be mentioned that the revocation of Article 370 and 35A has been one of the primary campaign promises of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the lead up to the 2019 General Elections.

In an announcement with massive repercussions for Jammu and Kashmir, Home Minister Amit Shah has announced in Rajya Sabha that the government has decided to repeal Article 370 of the Constitution which grants special status to J&K. The government has also decided to bifurcate the state into two Union territories – Jammu and Kashmir, which will have a legislature, and Ladakh, which will be without a legislature.
