Jaipur, July 6, 2019:

'Pink city' Jaipur, which is one of the most favored tourist destinations in the world, has been given the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) 'Heritage Site' tag.

The announcement was made after the 43rd Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, underway at Baku (Azerbaijan) from June 30 to July 10, after they had examined the nomination of the Walled City of Jaipur for inclusion in the World Heritage list.

A tweet sent out from UNESCO's official Twitter handle read: ""Just inscribed as @UNESCO #WorldHeritage Site: Jaipur City in Rajasthan, #India. Bravo."

Indian Prime Minister also expressed his enthusiasm at the inclusion of Jaipur in the prestigious list, and tweeted: ""Jaipur is a city associated with culture and valour. Elegant and energetic, Jaipur's hospitality draws people from all over. Glad that this city has been inscribed as a World Heritage Site by @UNESCO."

The historic walled city of Jaipur in Rajasthan, was founded in 1727 AD under the patronage of Sawai Jai Singh II. It serves as the capital city of the western Indian state of Rajasthan.

It evokes the royal family that once ruled the region and that, in 1727, founded what is now called the Old City, or “Pink City” for its trademark building color. At the center of its stately street grid (notable in India) stands the opulent, colonnaded City Palace complex. With gardens, courtyards and museums, part of it is still a royal residence.

It may be mentioned that to date, 1,092 sites in 167 countries have been inscribed on the World Heritage List.
