United Nations lauds India's preparations ahead of 'Fani'

Guwahati, May 4, 2019:

The United Nations has lauded India for its "zero casualties" policy before the cyclone flattened parts of Odisha before moving upwards to West Bengal.

Moreover, the UN has also lauded the Indian authorities for evacuating nearly 11 lakh people before the severe cyclone hit the coasts.

The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (ODRR) has stated that the Indian Meteorological department's early warning was instrumental in reducing casualties.

"They seem to have done a very good job in terms of minimizing the possibility for loss of life," Denis McClean, a spokesperson for the ODRR said at a UN news briefing in Geneva on Friday.

As of Saturday morning, less than 10 deaths were reported from the 175-kmph cyclone that made landfall in Odisha on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Odisha Police has taken major steps to tackle 'Fani'. They made efforts to bring all the people into a safe zone and help the injured. The police force has been on constant alert to make themselves available for any emergency.

The police in the state have also provided free food and cyclone shelter. Braving all odds, the Odisha Police have helped the state to stand united during one of the biggest natural disasters in the country.
