Congress will go to any extent to protect voting rights of the people: Gaurav Gogoi
Member of Parliament and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday, December 14 asserted that the right to vote is the greatest gift bestowed upon the people of India by the framers of the Constitution, echoing remarks made by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, at a Congress rally held at Ramlila Maidan.
Addressing party workers and supporters, Gogoi said the right to vote embodies the collective power and democratic authority of India’s 140 crore citizens. He stated that when unemployed youth, women, farmers, and workers express dissatisfaction with governance, they do so through the ballot, exercising their constitutional right to bring about change through the democratic process.
Alleging attempts to undermine this fundamental right, Gogoi accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of seeking to curtail voters’ freedom through what he described as “vote theft”. He claimed that such practices were initiated to prevent the central government from losing power.
The Congress leader lauded Rahul Gandhi for spearheading a nationwide campaign to protect voting rights, saying the movement spans from street-level mobilisation to interventions on the floor of Parliament.
“Congress will go to any extent to safeguard the people’s right to vote and their freedom of expression,” Gogoi asserted, adding that the party remains firmly committed to defending democratic values and constitutional guarantees.
Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the party stood firmly with “satya (truth)” and vowed to remove the “Narendra Modi–RSS government”. Launching an attack on the Election Commission, Gandhi alleged that they were acting in favour of the BJP.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, addressing the gathering, accused the BJP-RSS of attempting to undermine the Constitution. “In the name of Hindutva, they want to push the poor back into bondage. It was the Congress that won Independence for the country—Modi and Shah were not even born then,” Kharge said.
The Congress also announced that it has collected around six crore signatures from across the country against the alleged vote theft and will soon submit the memorandum to the President of India, seeking intervention to protect democratic institutions.
