Four killed, 25 injured in fiery multi-vehicle pile-up on Delhi–Agra expressway

At least four people were killed and around 25 others sustained injuries after a massive multi-vehicle pile-up on the Delhi–Agra Expressway in the early hours of Tuesday, authorities said. The accident, involving seven buses and three cars, resulted in several vehicles catching fire, with some victims reportedly charred to death.

The crash occurred at around 4.30 am on the Agra–Noida stretch of the expressway near Milestone 127 under the Baldeo police station area of Mathura district. Preliminary investigations suggest that dense fog and extremely poor visibility played a decisive role in triggering the chain collision.

Police officials said all the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment and none of them is stated to be in critical condition. Rescue teams and emergency responders reached the spot shortly after the incident and worked swiftly to evacuate passengers trapped inside the vehicles.

Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shlok Kumar said the accident was caused by near-zero visibility due to heavy fog. “Several vehicles collided with each other in quick succession. Following the collision, some buses caught fire. Emergency services were immediately pressed into action and rescue operations are almost complete,” he said.

Traffic movement on the expressway was suspended for several hours following the accident, with vehicles being diverted to alternate routes as the stretch remained blocked. Authorities later cleared the debris and arranged government vehicles to transport stranded passengers to their respective destinations.

SP Mathura Rural Suresh Chandra Rawat said the incident began when three cars collided, triggering a chain reaction. “Seven buses, including one state roadways bus and six sleeper buses, subsequently rammed into the cars. All the buses were engulfed in flames. A total of 11 fire tenders were deployed to douse the blaze, which has now been brought under control. Four bodies have been recovered so far,” he said.

The incident comes a day after multiple fog-related accidents across NCR expressways claimed at least six lives and left several others injured. On Monday, similar pile-ups were reported on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, the Delhi–Alwar Road and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, with dense fog and severely reduced visibility cited as the common factor in all cases.
