Mizoram is witnessing a remarkable surge in tourism following the inauguration of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line, which finally connected the state capital Aizawl to India’s national rail network in September 2025. The long-awaited link has not only ended decades of geographical isolation but also opened the gateway to Mizoram’s pristine hills, vibrant traditions, and warm hospitality — positioning the state as Northeast India’s emerging tourism hotspot.
According to the Mizoram Tourism Department, the state welcomed over 5.24 lakh tourists in 2024–25, marking a record 139.5 percent jump from 2.19 lakh visitors in 2023–24. This unprecedented rise represents the sharpest year-on-year increase in Mizoram’s tourism history. Before the railway became operational, the state’s visitor numbers had grown gradually — from 20,564 in 2020–21, amid the pandemic, to 1.32 lakh in 2021–22 and 2.22 lakh in 2022–23. Of the total visitors in 2024–25, over 5.18 lakh were domestic tourists, while nearly 6,000 international travellers arrived from more than 80 countries, including the US, UK, China, Japan, and Germany. The figures underscore Mizoram’s growing global appeal as a serene, culture-rich destination in Northeast India.
The 52-kilometre Bairabi–Sairang railway line, one of Indian Railways’ most challenging engineering achievements, features 130 bridges and 23 tunnels across rugged terrain. It has drastically reduced travel time to Aizawl, making the state far more accessible to visitors from across the country. The rail connectivity has become a key catalyst for transformation — stimulating growth in local businesses, from homestays and transport services to restaurants and handicraft outlets. In partnership with IRCTC, the Mizoram government has rolled out special tourist trains and curated travel packages that promote eco-tourism, adventure activities, and participation in local festivals such as Chapchar Kut and Thalfavang Kut.
Mizoram’s allure lies in its blend of natural splendour and cultural authenticity. The rolling hills of Reiek and Hmuifang, the tranquil Tamdil Lake, and the majestic Phawngpui (Blue Mountain) attract travellers seeking offbeat, immersive experiences. Traditional performances like the Cheraw (bamboo dance) and the state’s vibrant festivals offer glimpses into Mizo life that remains deeply rooted yet welcoming to the world. The state’s tourism model also stands out for its emphasis on sustainability and community-based tourism, ensuring that economic gains reach local residents while protecting ecological balance and cultural heritage.
The tourism boom is already creating significant social and economic ripples across Mizoram. The sector has generated new jobs, boosted small-scale entrepreneurship, and inspired new investments in hospitality and transport. Many local entrepreneurs are reporting record occupancy rates and growing demand for homestays and guided experiences. Chief Minister Lalduhoma has encouraged citizens to embody the values of honesty, humility, and hospitality
that define Mizo culture. “Tourism must grow hand in hand with our values,” he said, urging residents to act as ambassadors of the state’s unique identity.
With full rail connectivity now in place, Mizoram is on the threshold of a transformative era. The Bairabi–Sairang corridor is expected to further integrate the state into India’s economic and cultural mainstream while strengthening regional connectivity within the Northeast. As visitor numbers continue to soar, Mizoram is emerging as one of India’s most promising hill destinations — where modern infrastructure meets timeless culture. The state’s success story is a testament to how connectivity can unlock the potential of the Northeast, turning remoteness into opportunity and setting a new benchmark for sustainable tourism-driven growth.
