GANGTOK: Sikkim has become the first state in the Northeast India region to charge more than Rs 100 a litre for petrol.

In the capital of Sikkim, Gangtok, petrol costs Rs 100.15 per litre, while diesel costs Rs 91.55 per litre.

According to a price notification from state-owned fuel retailers, the price of petrol and diesel increased by 35 paise per litre and 18 paise per litre, respectively.

This is the 34th and 33rd price hikes in two months for petrol, respectively.

Sikkim has now joined the states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Bihar, Punjab, and Ladakh in charging over Rs 100 per litre for fuel.

The price of petrol has increased by Rs 9.11 after being hiked 34 times in two months.

On the other hand, a 33 times increase in diesel prices resulted in a price increase of Rs 8.63.
