DARJEELING: Addressing a sea of supporters, prominent Gorkha leader Bimal Gurung thundered against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and vowed to "destroy" it in North Bengal.

Bashing the BJP, his former long-time ally, he said, "BJP did not offered even 1 kg of rice while I was underground. They did not offer even a constable for security.

Bimal Gurung also tore into the BJP for “deceiving Gorkhas” and “wasting” people’s time for 12 years.

"Now we will give a befitting reply to this attitude of BJP in the upcoming election. We will easily win the three seats of the hills. We will destroy BJP in north Bengal," he said.

The BJP has not only deceived me, but they have deceived the Gorkha ‘jaati [community]’ and the Gorkhas will punish it,” he added.

After going through a political understanding with the ruling TMC, hitherto underground Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leader Bimal Gurung visited his hometown for the first time after three and a half years.

He addressed a mega gathering yesterday in Motor Stand, Darjeeling. At least one lakh people turned up to welcome Gurung back.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered its biggest defection on Saturday, since coming to power in West Bengal in 2011 when six of its sitting MLAs including a heavyweight leader and former Minister Suvendu Adhikari joined the BJP in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

A sitting TMC MP also joined the saffron party. A CPI(M) MLA who joined the TMC in 2018 without resigning from her post joined the BJP along with a CPI(M) and a Congress MLA.
