The apex mountaineering authority of India has announced not to issue permits to scale the 8,586m Mt. Kanchenjungha, the third-highest peak in the world.
The decision was given by the governing council of Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) as the peaks in Sikkim, which are under the category of 'sacred peaks', include Mt. Kanchenjungha.
It is to be mentioned that Mt Kanchenjunga in Sikkim, the ‘holy peak’, which has been worshipped by the locals for centuries, is now among the 137 mountain peaks of the country which have been declared open for the expedition by the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA).
While the announcement has put the third highest mountain in the world on the global map, the news has clearly questioned the sentiments of the Sikkimese people and shaken the local organizations and stakeholders in the state. The people of Sikkim stand together in not accepting the notification and reaching out to the state government to maintain the sacredness of the peak.
Meanwhile, football star Bhaichung Bhutiya on Friday wrote to Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju to reconsider the decision to open Kanchenjunga for a mountaineering expedition.
“Mt. Kanchenjunga which is located in Sikkim is a sacred peak for the people of Sikkim. It is also worshipped as our guardian deity and protector of the people of Sikkim,” writes Bhaichung in his letter.
