In North Sikkim, the office of the District Collector-Cum-Magistrate has announced the reopening of the Lachung-Yumthang axis for tourists, effective December 1, 2023.

This comes after a challenging period, especially in the aftermath of the flash floods that struck Sikkim on October 4, leaving over 3,000 people stranded, primarily tourists in Lachen and Lachung towns.

The reopening, outlined in Reference Number DC (M)/2023-24, comes with a set of conditions aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of tourists exploring this region. Tourist vehicles will now move in convoys along the Sankalang-Toong-Chungthang road.

However, it's essential to note that after 4:00 pm, no tourist vehicles will be permitted on this route.

The notice states that representatives of TAAS (Travel Agents Association of Sikkim) and the Tourism Department are expected to provide necessary assistance.

While the Lachung-Yumthang axis is set to welcome tourists once again, the notice also specifies that the Lachen-Gurudongmar point will remain closed until further notice.

Earlier, the region faced a severe setback when flash floods, triggered by an outburst in a glacial lake in North Sikkim, claimed the lives of over 80 people. The Mangan district, where Lachen and Lachung towns are situated, bore the brunt of the natural disaster.
