Exclusive: Sikkim Tourism Minister assumes office, vows to boost adventure, eco-tourism

Tshering Thendup Bhutia, the newly appointed Tourism Minister of Sikkim officially assumed office on June 14, following a landslide victory in the 2024 Sikkim Assembly Elections.

In an exclusive interview with India Today NE, Bhutia shared his ambitious plans to boost the state's tourism industry focusing on a blend of adventure tourism and eco-friendly initiatives, further pledging a dynamic strategy to enhance tourism in the state. He shared his vision for promoting Sikkim as a premier destination for adventure and eco-tourism.

Bhutia, who has already begun working closely with senior officers of the tourism department stated the immediate focus on bolstering the sector. "We just had a meeting with the principal secretary, secretary and other senior officers of our department. We are committed to promoting tourism and ensuring top-notch services for our visitors," Bhutia stated.

One of the key areas Bhutia highlighted was the promotion of adventure tourism. Recognising the growing interest in adventure activities, he mentioned that detailed discussions are underway to develop strategies that will enhance Sikkim's offerings in this segment. "We are very much into the promotion of adventure tourism. We will be meeting shortly to finalise the strategies that will improve tourism in Sikkim," he said.

Bhutia also addressed the increasing number of tourists visiting Sikkim annually and the consequent need for more accommodation options. "We are very much focused on expanding homestays and village tourism, as Sikkim is known for its organic farming and rural charm. This will allow tourists to explore our villages and experience the local lifestyle. Enhancing homestay options will be a priority," he said.

As Sikkim is renowned as a green state, Bhutia was asked about the environmental initiatives that complement tourism growth. He said that Sikkim government is committed to maintaining its green credentials, mentioning the Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang's innovative "Mero Rukh Mero Santati" program. This initiative, which requires families to plant 100 trees for every newborn aims to boost the state's greenery significantly.

"Our Chief Minister is very much concerned about maintaining Sikkim's greenery. The 'Mero Rukh Mero Santati' program has been a success since its launch last year. Each family plants 100 trees for every newborn, which has significantly increased our forest cover. This green initiative not only benefits the environment but also enhances Sikkim's appeal as a tourist destination," Bhutia said.

He noted that Sikkim's forest cover has increased from 75 per cent to 85 per cent over the past two decades, attributing this growth to effective environmental policies and community participation.

"This has had a beautiful impact on tourism. Tourists are attracted to the fresh air and lush landscapes, which promote a healthy lifestyle," Bhutia added.
