Heavy rainfall in East Sikkim triggered multiple landslides early morning on September 8, at the 20th Mile near Bardang along the Singtam–Rangpo road (NH10), causing significant disruption to vehicular movement on this vital highway.
The affected stretch serves as a key lifeline for connectivity in the region, linking towns and facilitating the transport of goods and passengers.
According to initial reports, a taxi vehicle was stranded amid the debris, though fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far. Commuters expressed concern over the safety of the route, highlighting the vulnerability of the highway during heavy monsoon rains.
Authorities have been mobilized promptly, and clearance operations are currently underway to remove boulders, mud, and debris to restore normal traffic. However, continuous rainfall in the region is complicating efforts, with the risk of further landslides remaining high.
Travelers have been advised to exercise caution and follow official traffic updates before planning journeys along the Singtam–Rangpo stretch. Officials have also suggested avoiding non-essential travel until the road is fully cleared and deemed safe for vehicles.
