Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, on July 16, led the distribution of cheques, house repair tokens, and approval letters for protective wall construction under various state-run schemes.
The event was held at Samman Bhawan, where a large gathering of people from different walks of life turned up to receive assistance aimed at supporting the needy and promoting self-reliance.
Present at the event were representatives from mandir committees, gumpa committees, churches, schools, clubs, NGOs, colleges, and students from both Indian and foreign universities. The aid was given under several of the chief minister’s flagship welfare programmes, such as the Chief Minister’s Discussion Grant, Medical Assistance Scheme, Education Assistance Scheme, and Employment Assistance Scheme.
Speaking at the event, CM Tamang said the government is committed to helping people who are genuinely in need and who wish to improve their lives through honest work. "We will support those who work hard. But those who misuse the benefits or sell off the help they receive will not be spared. Our goal is to make people self-sufficient, not dependent," he stated.
One of the most notable schemes mentioned was the Employment Assistance Scheme, where eligible individuals can receive up to Rs 5 lakh to start small businesses such as food stalls, tailoring shops, piggery or poultry farms, and other ventures. CM Tamang stressed that these efforts are designed to give people a dignified means of livelihood.
For families whose homes were damaged by natural disasters or fire, the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund has already provided help to thousands of individuals since 2019. The aid includes financial assistance for rebuilding and repairs. Under the housing initiative, the government is now working to build 11,000 homes in phases. These houses will be constructed zone-wise, giving priority to the poorest families first. The CM clarified that it's not possible to construct all houses at once due to budgetary limits.
The distribution of tin roofing sheets will start on July 19 from each Block Administrative Centre (BAC), targeting families that are most in need. In many areas, token distribution for this scheme has already begun. However, CM Tamang made it clear that this will be a gradual process. “We request everyone to be patient. We are going step by step,” he said.
Importantly, CM Tamang also cautioned against people trying to game the system. He said there have been cases where both husband and wife applied separately for the same scheme to claim double benefits. “We will not allow such unfair practices. Only one person per family will be eligible. If necessary, we will make the names of dishonest applicants public,” he said.
To ensure transparency, the financial assistance is being distributed strictly through cheques. “No cash distribution. Everything is being documented to ensure accountability,” the chief minister said.
CM Tamang also highlighted that under previous governments, such structured support for the poor and working-class was unheard of. “Now we have clear guidelines and systems in place. Those who deserve will get. No favoritism,” he said.
He thanked all the community leaders, religious institutions, and local clubs for their participation in ensuring that the right people are identified and supported. He urged everyone to work together to ensure fairness and success in all these schemes.
