Sikkim MP Indra Hang Subba calls for sensitive, tech-driven electoral reforms in Lok Sabha
Sikkim MP Indra Hang Subba on Wednesday, December 10 underscored the importance of adopting technology-driven measures in India’s electoral framework while maintaining heightened caution for smaller states. Participating in a Parliamentary discussion on Electoral Reforms in the Lok Sabha, Subba stressed that the reform process must strengthen efficiency, transparency, and public trust without compromising the unique demographic realities of regions like Sikkim.
Highlighting the role of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in refining electoral rolls, he noted that even minor variations in voter numbers could significantly alter electoral outcomes in states with limited populations. For such states, he said, every phase—from voter registration to verification—must be conducted with meticulous care, accountability, and sensitivity to local socio-geographical contexts.
Subba further pointed out that electoral reforms must reflect India’s geographical diversity while also ensuring fair representation in Parliament. He argued that remote, hilly, and sparsely populated regions continue to face distinctive structural and demographic challenges that require tailored policy solutions.
Reiterating his position, the Sikkim MP said that the ultimate aim of reforms should be to foster greater citizen participation, reinforce democratic confidence, and protect the distinct political and cultural identities of smaller states.
