Sikkim: Residents of Kholatar Moonew speak out after alleged attack over opposition to hotmix crusher plant
Residents of Kholatar Moonew under the Daramdin constituency in Soreng District of Sikkim have demanded justice following an alleged assault incident that emerged amid opposition to a controversial hotmix crusher plant in the area.
According to villagers, concerns over pollution and the impact of emissions from the plant had led local residents to raise demands for cleaner air and stricter regulatory action. Following complaints, the Sikkim Pollution Control Board reportedly ordered the closure of the hotmix crusher plant in March.
The matter later escalated into violence, with villagers alleging that land owner Aas Bir Subba resorted to intimidation after the shutdown order. The allegations culminated in a daylight assault on local resident Chandra Hang Subba, an incident that drew significant public attention across the district.
Addressing a press conference, victims and local residents publicly detailed their account of the events and reiterated their demand for full legal action and accountability.
Authorities have reportedly arrested five accused persons in connection with the case. Those in custody include contractor KB Gurung and Aas Bir Subba, who has been identified by complainants as the alleged mastermind behind the incident.
Victims stated that while arrests have been made, one accused person remains absconding and urged authorities to ensure that all individuals connected to the case are brought under the ambit of the law.
The case continues to draw attention in Soreng district as residents call for justice and stronger protection of community rights and environmental concerns.
